Carol Braunschweig

Braunshweig

Dr. Braunschweig is a is a Professor in the Department of Disability and Human Development of the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

She earned her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan.  Her research interests focus on how nutritional status, diet and body composition impact outcomes in two major areas; (1) the impact of obesity and body composition on disease risks in various populations including the disabled, women and minority populations and (2) the influence of non-volitional nutritional support (parenteral and enteral feedings) on clinical outcomes in critically ill hospitalized patients.

She has just started a 5-year clinical trial focused on the impact of enteral nutrition on clinical and immunologic outcomes in malnourished patients admitted to the intensive care unit with adult respiratory distress syndrome.  She is also the co-Primary Investigator or co-Investigator in several exercise and diet interventions for obesity treatment and prevention which examine such questions as how the environment impacts obesity risks in the disabled, how a school based nutrition and exercise intervention impacts 3-5 yr old children’s fitness and nutritional status and how a web-based intervention influences maintenance of weight loss in African American women recruited from Chicago area churches.  She has been the major professor for four previous doctoral students, directed 14 masters thesis and currently has 3 PhD students.
