Examination of Built Environment Instruments Addressing Health Promoting Behaviors

The UDHP project was a content review of the commonalities and disparities across existing built environment measurement tools which measure health promotion accessibility and community livability. This study identified subject domain content overlap across instruments, and which domains and instruments were sensitive to accessibility for people with disabilities and other constituent groups, or which required further modification. Information on instrument methodological features, including instrument development methods, research design, and psychometrics were also provided.

Summary Tables

  • Instrument Checklist Table

The instrument checklist provides information about the field it is measuring, the domains that are covered, whether the instrument is subjective, objective, or GIS based , and whether or not it covers disability topics and had any psychometric analysis performed.

  • Sub-Domains with Universal Design Applicability

This table provides an overview of what sub domains comprise the larger domains that had been measured in the instrument analysis checklist table. It also enables the reader to view how these sub domains fit with priorities assessed by universal design principles and future recommendations.

  • Disability Specific Instruments

This table provides a listing of disability specific instruments, the domains they measure and some sample items.
